Being an Austrian-American Norwegian with Swedish ancestors having lived in Norway, Austria, Russia and Denmark I currently reside in Germany (again). Here I am a Professor at the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg where I am responsible for the Bachelor degree programs “Pop Music Design” and “World Music” as well as the library.
Prior to that I was employed at the Musicology Department of the University of Copenhagen from 2006 until 2010 doing research and working on a phd on contemporary Russian popular music in St. Petersburg. The dissertation titled “Окна открой! – Open the windows! Scenes, transcultural flows, and identity politics in popular music from Post-Soviet St. Petersburg” was successfully defended in September 2009. A revised version of the phd was published by ibidem Verlag in 2011 and then, as a revised and extended 2nd edition, with a new titel Rocking St. Petersburg – Transcultural Flows and Identity Politics in Post-Soviet Popular Music in 2014. For more details about me see my CV.
In my free time I am active as a trumpet player (the bands have included, among others, Svoбода, Hotel Desperado, Tubalkain and Aupair Outrair), take pictures and cultivate Lithops and carnivorous plants.
Due to my multi-locational background my blog aims to give my friends and family an insight to what I am currently doing (and where I am…). It also aims to share interesting facts, literature and theories related to my phd to an academic audience.
